John Phillips I of Prince George Co., VA

From ENC Phillips Group Wiki

Unknown Phillips DNA group.

The only adult male Phillips who appeared in the 1704 Quit Rent list in PG Co. was a Nathaniel Phillips who died in 1738 in Surry Co., apparently with no issue as he left his property to a neighbor named Clanton.

The first record of a Phillips other than Nathaniel in PC Co. follows:

PG Co. Wills & Deeds 1710-1713 pg. 49

Account of estate of Robert Speyers, dec'd,. Debtor: To judgements obtained by Capt. Fr. Clements, Martha Marks---etc. ---- William Phillips, --- etc. 10 April 1711

From the following it is known that a John Phillips arrived in Prince George Co. (PG Co.) prior to 1720 as he purchased land at that time adding to existing land.

Land Records

Prince George Co. Records 1713-1720

13 Feb., 1720 Edmond Browder of Prince George County to John Phillips of same, 129 acres bounded by said John Phillips and by land formerly belonging to Solomon Crooks.
S: Edmond Browder Wit: Robert Munford; Buller Hubert; J. Bolding Rec: 14 Feb. 1720

The following may or may not be the same John Phillips as above:

In 1715, John Poythress of PGC was granted land for the transport of two persons, one of which was a John Phillips. The 100 acres granted was on the Meherrin River, supposedly in Isle of Wight Co. However, from other land records it is known John Poythress owned land adjacent to John Phillips I of Second Swamp in PG Co. (There were Phillips present in I of W County during this period and the above John may have been one of them and not the John Phillips I of Pr. George CO.)

Pr. George Co. Records 1733-1792 Sept. 12, 1738

On petition of James Baugh, David Meeks, -----, -----, RICHARD PHILLIPS, GEORGE PHILLIPS etc etc.: they are permitted to clear a road from Plantation of Peter Mitchell, the most convenient way into Monkneck Road. James Baugh appointed overseer.

From the following two VA Patent records we know that John I had a son named George who lived adj. to him on Second Swamp. These patents were dated Sept. 20, 1751. A court record in 1738 for permission to clear a road (below) indicates a possible second and third son of John I, although no subsequent records have been noted for Richard in PG CO. Another possibility is that George, son of John I, had sons George, Richard and John, and it is his sons George and John who show up in Brunswick & Lunenburg Cos. in the mid 1700's. Monksneck Creek later became Rowanty Creek. You will note from census data, which follows later in this report, several Phillips lived in the Rowanty Creek/ Darvills area.

Of note also is that 1764-1767 the Bristol Parish paid a1000# tobacco to an Ann Phillips for the care of a person named Butterworth. From the following record (and other similar records) we know that Butterworths lived in this same Rowanty Creek area. See below:

VA State Land Office 13 October 1727 Pr. George County Nicholas Butterworth

150 acres on the north side of Gravilly (sic) Run and adj. James Williams

Note: Gravelly Run fed into what became Rowanty Creek.

From 1769 through 1778, a William Call was paid about 1000 # tobacco per year by Bristol Parish for the care of an ANN PHILLIPS. Since John II was apparently still living during the period of the payments, it is unknown who this Ann Phillips was and why the Parish was paying for her care. The amount of the payments would suggest an important person.

Other possible sons of John I

They include John (II) and Thomas. John II & Thomas appear to be contemporaries and born ca 1700 as the Bristol Parish records of births and baptisms of their respective children indicate those children being born very close in dates to one another beginning in 1726. Thus a dob for John I, if he is the father of either John II or Thomas should be no later than 1680. The names John and George were used extensively by John II and wife Anne and their descendants. However only the name John was used by Thomas & Isabella and if Isabella was indeed the daughter of John Lanthtrop, then the name of John might be attributed to him. Bristol Parish was established in 1643 and, at one time, embraced the whole valley of the Appomattox River. Thus not all births recorded in the Parish Vestry would be from Prince George County. In the 1700's the Parish consisted of parts of Charles City, Henrico and Pr. George Co.

From Bristol Parish records the following births of John II/Ann and Thomas/ Isabella

The blue color is used to differentiate the children of John & Ann(e) from those of Thos. & Isabel(la).

  1. 8 May 1726 - John Phillips, son of Thomas Phillips and Isabel, born. John Phillips baptized 7 June 1726.
  2. 6 November 1726 - Joseph Phillips, son of John Phillips and Ann, born. NO BAPTISM RECORDED.
  3. 23 July 1728 - Mason Phillips, son of Thomas Phillips and Isabel, born. Mason Phillips baptized 16 Sep. 1728
  4. 9 March 1730/1731 - Mary Phillips, dau. of Thomas Phillips and Isabel, born. Mary Phillips bapt. 19 April 1731.
  5. Mary Phillips - dau. of John Phillips and Anne, born 11 April 1731, baptized 14 November 1731.
  6. [1732 OR 1733 WE THINK THOMAS PHILLIPS, SON OF THOS. AND ISABELLA WAS BORN, ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF CHILDREN IN THOMAS PHILLIPS'S WILL IN CRAVEN CO. NC.]
  7. 12 Sept. 1734 - James Phillips, son of Thomas Phillips and Isabella, born.
Note: No baptism recorded. This is the first time the name "Isabella" appears.
Note: No further record of Thomas and Isabel[la] in Prince George Co.
  8. 20 Aug. 1740 - John Phillips, son of John and Anne Phillips, born. (John III)
  9. George, s. of John Phillips and Anne, born 15 February 1742/1743. Bapt. 29 May 1743. (George II)
  10. Elizabeth, dau. of John Phillips and Anne, born 5 Feb. 1745-1746.

Indentures

In the Manuscript Room of The Library of Virginia (among the 'Lost County Records') there is a manuscript dated 19 January 1798 which was filed in the Petersburg District Court No. 28 in April, 1801. This was an indenture between John Phillips and Elizabeth Phillips equally dividing the slaves which had been left to them in the will of their father, John Phillips the younger. (see record at end of this report) Note that from the above Bristol Records that John Phillips II had a son John born 20 Aug. 1740 and a daughter Elizabeth born Feb. 5, 1746. I don't think there is any question but that this record is of the family listed above and that the phrase 'John Phillips the younger' refers to John II son of John I. This also would indicate that Elizabeth, by then 54 years of age had not married. One does not know how long after the death of John II, this indenture was written. John II supposedly married Ann Parker in 1724 and began having children in Nov. 1726 and was thus probably born 1700-1703 and would have been in his mid 90's if the indenture was filed shortly after his death. Since John Phillips was not listed in the 1789/90 Land Tax and/or Personal Lists for Prince George Co. (but Ann, Jr. was) the implication is that John II died before 1789. The indenture was simply to resolve ownership of a number of slaves jointly owned by John (III) and Eliz. that had been willed to them by their father. Possible other issue of John & Ann are a William and a Jesse / Jessie Phillips. Also there is no record found to date that establishes the death of known issue George and Joseph whose births were recorded in Bristol Parish records. The following record may be related to the death of John II but cannot determine what the relationship would be of William to John II as the last record of issue of John II in Bristol Vestry was Elizabeth in 1746.

From PG Co. Miscellany 1711-1814 by Benj. Weisiger III
PG Co. Execution Book 1801-1803 p. 37
May 12, 1801 William Phillips, assignee of John Rawles, Exec. Of John Phillips
( Perhaps John II and Ann also had a son William, born after 1746 and not recorded in the Bristol Parish Register.)

As there is only the indenture and no will, one cannot with any certainty state that John III and his sister Elizabeth were the only surviving children of John II, however it appears likely that the following record is that of John Phillips II and his son Joseph who was born Nov., 1726. John II's son, John III, was born in 1743 and thus could not be the John of this patent. From the location of this property, it is believed this is land that initially belonged to John I. PG Co. being one of the so-called ' lost record or burned counties', few wills, deeds etc are available. However, VA land patents, being kept at Richmond, survived.

Additional Thoughts

Because there are no birth or baptismal records in Bristol Parish for issue of George, son of John I, it is difficult to establish a dob range. Was he older or younger than John II ? It appears that the George & Richard Phillips of the 1738 road clearing petition cited above could be his issue. Further the George of the 1738 petition might well be the one who patented land in Brunswick/Lunenburg Co. in 1745. George (I), son of John I, was still patenting land in PG Co. in 1751 while the George Phillips of Brunswick/Lunenburg was serving as Vestryman in Cumberland Parish in Lunenburg County in 1746. Also the George Phillips of Lunenburg Co. married first Susannah Dyer in the late 1750's (first son Dyer born 1757) and married (2) Ann Brown in 1768. This George died in 1786 and it is at least feasible that he could be the son of George I of PGC and thus the GS of John I.

Appearing in the same area of Lunenburg Co. at about the same time was a John Phillips (tithing list of Lunenburg 1748). Although I have not found such a record, according to another researcher, there was a lands sale from John to George. I suspect but have no proof that they were brothers. Due to age he cannot be John III (b. 1740), son of John II, nor can he be John the son of Thomas who was in NC at this time. So either he is unrelated to the PGC John Phillips or is a probable son of George I and thus GS of John I.

The various records of the Second Swamp Phillips indicate land on both sides of the Second Swamp but one must rely on location of 'neighbors" to pinpoint where they lived. From available records I can safely say that some of the land was very near and probably within the present day city limits of Petersburg. Other land acquired later was southwest of that city near Rowanty Creek and south of Butterwood Swamp. On present day maps, this would lie west of Interstate I- 95 between the towns of Dinwiddie and Darvills. The City of Petersburg and the location of the Rowanty-Darvills lands are all in the present county of Dinwiddie. Some of the land was about 7 miles southeast of the City of Petersburg.

From PG Co. Miscellany 1711-1814 by Benj. WeisigerIII
PG Co. Execution Book 1801-1803 p. 37
Clement Livesay appeared on charge by Elizabeth Phillips of being the father of her bastard child, and is ordered to pay maintenance, with Burwell Livesay as his security.
(Since Elizabeth, daughter of John II was born in 1746 don€™t believe this could be her.)

From the Petersburg Daily Express Film 133, Lib. Of VA
Dec. 15, 1856. pg 3, column 6
Phillips, John A., deceased, 250 acres, Prince George County, 6 and one-half miles from Petersburg, near Jerusalem Plank Road

It was assumed that Thomas Phillips, the birth of whose children were recorded in the Bristol Parish Registry, was a brother of the John Phillips, the births of whose issue were also recorded therein and further that they possibly married sisters Ann & Isabella Lanthrop, daughters of John Lanthrop who died in PG Co. in 1718/19. However there have been no records found to date to support this assumption and no deeds or other land records associated with Thomas Phillips in Prince George Co. One must also remember that Bristol Parish included parts of Charles City and Henrico Counties so there is no way for one to determine if Thomas resided in PG Co. or Henrico. It appears that the possibility of his descendancy from John Phillips I is questionable at best. Also of note is that while the name George was carried down in the issue of John II and other Phillips in the Rowanty/Darvills area, it was not used by Thomas Phillips or of any of his issue. A list of VA marriages by Linda Phillips Morris published in 1977 lists the following: 1724 John Phillips and Ann Parker - Prince George Co. Bristol "?" It is not known what "??" implied; - ie that the record from which the info came said Bristol but not Parish or if she was only assuming that because it was in PG CO. that it was in Bristol Parish. If accurate as believed, this would erase the possibility of John and Thomas Phillips being married to Lanthrop sisters and place further doubt on the two of them being brothers.

One possibility of the origin of John Phillips I is as a son of John Phillips of Charles City Co. and grandson of William Phillips of that county. Available records indicate that William died ca 1693 and son John died ca 1740 leaving sons John and Robert. The will of Ann Woodhouse in June 1728 in C.C. Co. left property to her 'Grandsons Robert & John Phillips'. Robert was Executor of her Estate and presented her inventory to the CC Co. Court in 1741. I believe that the property where Ann Woodhouse lived was on or near the eastern banks of the James River across from Flower de Hundred in Pr. George Co., and thus not far from the Second Swamp property of the Prince George Co. Phillips. Also of note is the name William apparently carried down in the descendants of Second Swamp Phillips. Therefore it is at least a possibility that this John Phillips of Charles City Co. could be the same as John I of PG Co.

JESSE Phillips 100 acres
JOHN Phillips 477 acres (Notice that this is same acreage as held by Ann, Jr. in 1790 and thus John is probably her heir. This may be the John Phillips whose will caused the survey of 1820. Per M J MatzPhillips/Martha Marble this land was divided between John A. Phillips, George E. Phillips and John Pace in right of his wife.) Since John II was born ca 1700-1705, this John could be John III, born 1740. Thus one might deduce that John Phillips II, father of John III died prior to 1789 (when the 1790 tax list was made) and willed the land to his wife for her life and then at her death to his son John. The John Phillips listed in that same tax list with NO land is probably John III, her son. If we assume that John II was married 1724 and his wife Ann age 17 then in 1789 Ann would be about 80 years old. Elizabeth, daughter of John & Ann was born in Feb. 1746 and would be in her 50's and apparently unmarried. John III, son of John & Ann was born in Aug. 1740 and would be age 58 at the time of the indenture.

CONCLUSIONS

1.) I believe that the residents of Prince George and Dinwiddie Counties (and the Independent City of Petersburg) in the late 1700s and 1800s included descendants of both George and John II, both of whom were sons of John I. There were too many to be only descendants of John II. The Phillips who lived in the Rowanty Creek/Darvills area are the most likely to be descendants of George Phillips.

2.) It appears that John II may have had an additional son, William, whose birth was not listed in the Bristol Parish Registry.

3.) It appears likely that the George and Richard Phillips named in the 1738 road petition were offspring of George, son of John I. Further, based upon the fact that the location of this road (near Rowanty Creek) was only a few miles (15 to 20) from the location of the land that George Phillips patented in Brunswick Co. in 1745, (about 7 miles west of the Stephen Jones Bridge on the Nottoway River) it is entirely feasible that those George Phillips are one and the same.

4.) The last record that has been found in Prince George Co. relating to Joseph Phillips, son of John II, is the 1755 Aldrich patent for land adjacent to Joseph and John Phillips between Warwick and Second Swamps. His dob of Nov. 1726 is the right time frame for the Joseph Phillips who died in Brunswick Co. in 1777. Joseph of Brunswick (my GGGGG GF) was married ca 1750 based upon dob's of his children. His widow, Elizabeth died some 25 years after he did indicating that he probably died relatively young. Two of Joseph & Eliz.'s children gave the middle name of Moore to children of their own (including one girl), making it highly probable that Elizabeth's maiden name was Moore. There were Moore families near the Phillips in Pr. George County.

5.) Until such time as "proven" descendants of John II or George (of PG Co.) can be identified and brought into the DNA test program we can never be certain of the relationship of John II and Thomas, or of any of the PG Co. Phillips to George and John of Lunenburg Co., or to Joseph of Brunswick Co. Finding a descendant of George and/or John Phillips of Lunenburg Co. and getting a DNA test of them while helpful will prove nothing without also a tested proven descendant of John II or George I of PG Co.
